Nuclear Energy Organisation Netherlands (NEO NL)

Building a climate-neutral Netherlands
About us

Our goal is to build two nuclear power plants

On behalf of the government

NEO NL is a state-owned company under the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth (KGG). The ministry sets the framework within which NEO NL carries out its tasks. It is also our sole shareholder.

Our mission

We are responsible for the construction of two nuclear power plants. Each plant will have a capacity of at least 1,000 megawatts (MW). One megawatt can supply approximately 1,000 households of electricity. Both plants will be built at a single site.

Why was NEO NL established?

The Netherlands is developing a reliable energy system built on a diverse energy mix. Nuclear energy complements other climate-friendly sources, such as solar and wind power. Unlike these sources, nuclear energy provides stable, weather-independent electricity generation. In doing so, we contribute to a climate-neutral Netherlands.

A highly complex task

What does this require of us?

We are aware that we are undertaking one of the most complex and long-term projects in the Netherlands. This requires the highest level of expertise, diligence, and a strong sense of responsibility. We carry out every step of the project in accordance with the highest safety and quality standards. At the same time, we recognise that this project has an impact on people: on local residents, surrounding communities, and society at large. Even though the government has not yet decided on the construction location, meaningful engagement and strong relations will be an essential part of our responsibility.

How do we approach this?

Our task requires knowledge and experience that no single organisation can provide. Nuclear energy touches on many areas: from technology and safety to spatial planning and social involvement. That is why we work together with many different parties. Going forward, we will continue to do so at national, provincial, municipal, and local levels. For specialised expertise, we also call on consultants, engineers, and knowledge institutes.

“Our task is exceptionally complex, both technically and substantively. Equally important, however, is the understanding that we carry out this project in and together with society.”

Jaap Eikelboom, Interim CEO
